"The whole astonishing range of Brazilian music is revealed…"—Stage and Television Today.
The hardback of this book, which appeared in 1994 was revised, expanded and issued in paperback in 2002 . The author takes us from the merging of Amerindian, African and European cultures under the Portuguese colonists to the evolution of the many rhythms and dance forms associated with popular Brazilian music. The choro, the samba, the bossa nova are coolly and carefully unravelled and Schriener blends portraits of Brazil's most iconic musical figures, song lyrics with more personal observations. The book ends with a look at the music scene of the 1990s.
