Oodgeroo Noonuccal was born Kathleen Jean Mary Ruska, later Kath Walker (November 1920 – 16 September 1993) was an Aboriginal Australian political activist, artist and educator, who campaigned for Aboriginal rights. Noonuccal was best known for her poetry, and was the first Aboriginal Australian to publish a book of verse.
She was awarded the MBE in 1970 but returned it in 1987 in protest against the celebrations of Australia's bicentenary which she felt was a glorification of aborginal denegration over 2oo years and at the same time, she renounced her birth name and adopted a new aboriginal name.
