Philippe Ariès (1914-1984) was a French historian best known as a pioneer in the field of cultural history, the "history of mentalities" which flourished from the 1960s to 1980s and dealt with the themes and concerns of ordinary people going about their lives. His book Centuries of Childhood, was seminal study that launched historical scholarship on childhood and family life in the Western world.
